Stationery Heel Position
I have put this in some form of step program to help you stay on track. Please don't move to the next step unless you can guarantee your dog understands the previous step. Meaning you do it 5 out of 5 times and the dog is 100% successful.
Know the position you want (this is where the dogs' bottom is to your left leg, the dog's shoulder, and of course head position)
With the dog sitting in heel position:-
1. Take the food from the dog's nose - up to your armpit (release command - clicker or Yes - then lower hand to feed). Always release the dog when your hand is away from the dog.
2. Take the food from the dog's nose up to your armpit, give the Heel command and move your left hand out to your side. When the dog looks up at you - click/yes and then take your hand back to your armpit (this confirms to the dog) and then lower to the dog and reward.
3. Take the food from the dog's nose up to your armpit, give the Heel command and move your left hand out to your side. When the dog looks up at you take one pace forward - click/yes and reward by moving your hand back to the armpit and lower to the dog.
4. Take the food from the dog's nose up to your armpit, give the Heel command and move your left hand out to your side. When the dog looks up at you take two paces forward - click/yes and reward by moving your hand back to the armpit and lower to the dog.
5. Give the dog the Heel command, take your arm up and out to the side (keep the dog in stationery sit), and lower your hand to the side of the dog's head or near - when the dog looks at you, click/yes and reward. (there is no food in the hand at this stage, so if your dog goes to the hand it will not be
rewarded with anything.
6. Now do number 5, but this time have food in the hand. (Now we use the food as a distraction).
7 Repeat the whole process with a toy.
8. Now start moving 3 to 5 steps with your dog in heel position and your hand down beside the dog. If your dog is not continually looking at you, then you have moved too fast - go back to beginning.
Have fun everyone see you in two weeks.
Cheers
Tabitha
